Tuesday’s game against Elkin meant a lot for the Lady Huskies, both on the court and in the community.
Ashe County scored 32 second-half points to take a 43-32 victory over the visiting Lady Elks. Even more importantly, fans, coaches and players that attended the event raised awareness for breast cancer by wearing their favorite pink articles of clothing. The two teams warmed up in pink shirts, while fans and coaches supported both teams in their pink attire.
“Hoops 4 Hope” events all across the country have helped bring awareness to the disease, and thanks to the support from Ashe County fans, the team was able to raise $125 in donations to fight the disease.
On the court, Ashe led from the first quarter on and captured its 11th victory of the season, putting the Lady Huskies in third place in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
Paige Spell scored nine points, Morgan Hudler scored nine points, grabbed six rebounds and pulled down three assists while senior Chelsea Reavis scored nine points on three three-pointers to pace the Ashe squad.
Junior Emily Flanagan scored five points and led the team with 10 rebounds. Abby Lopp chipped in five points, Ashton Lee added two points, Hallie Brown had two points and Victoria Reed had one point and six rebounds.
Elkin’s Makayla Dimette led all scorers with 12 points.
The Lady Huskies are now 11-9 overall and 9-4 in the MVAC.
The team will have to face the top two teams in the MVAC to wrap up the regular season. Ashe will travel to North Wilkes on Friday to take on the Lady Vikings, who entered this week unbeaten in the MVAC at 12-0. The team will then host West Wilkes on Senior Night next Tuesday. West is currently 10-4 in the MVAC.
