Ashe County scored 33 unanswered points, and gave the senior players something to remember, beating the Forbush Falcons 33-10.

The only points in the first quarter came on a 30-yard field goal from Falcon kicker Alexis Torres.

The Huskies blew the game wide open in the second quarter with three touchdowns in the final four and a half minutes of the quarter.

Jonathan Cox started the scoring with a 34-yard gallop down the sideline. Anthony Federico booted the point after touchdown, making the score 7-3 with 4:19 remaining.

Ashe got the ball back quickly, and scored again, this time through the air. Sophomore quarterback Connor Bowers dropped back and found Alex Laws in the corner of the end zone for a 39-yard touchdown. The extra point was no good.

The final score came just 11 seconds later after Ashe recovered an onside kick deep in Forbush territory that the Falcons could not get to. Bowers made them pay with his second TD pass of the game, this one a 15-yard screen pass to Cox. Federico’s extra point was good, putting Ashe in front 20-3 at the halftime break.

Cox found the endzone for a third time on the Huskies’ opening drive of the second half. Just over a minute into the third, Cox scampered 60 yards to push the lead to 26-3.

Three minutes later, Cox scored yet again, this one a big 79-yard run that gashed the Forbush defense and any hope the team had of a comeback.

Forbush was held off the scoreboard in the second half until Jordan Sawyers powered into the end zone from four yards out with 11 seconds left in the ballgame.

Cox finished the game with 274 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries, as well as the touchdown reception. Carson Knight added two carries for 10 yards and Eli Gambill had one carry for 16 yards.

Bowers only completed two passes, but both went for touchdowns and 54 total yards with no interceptions.

Defensively, senior Cameron Guyton led the way with seven tackles. Jake Woods and Dominic Maxwell had six tackles while Parker Dunne finished with five. Justin Scarborough had four takedowns, Gambill, Cox, Knight, Brandon Carpenter, Cullen Ashley, and Hawkens Flanagan all had three tackles.

The Huskies forced four turnovers with an interception from Matthew Hamilton and fumble recoveries from Woods, Hunter Barnes and Michael Elliott.

Ashe improved to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. Forbush saw its record drop to 1-8 overall and 1-6 in the MVAC.

While this win does not clinch a playoff birth for Ashe, it puts the team in the driver’s seat for a playoff game that could include a home game if other games also go in Ashe’s favor.

The Huskies finish the regular season this week at East Wilkes.

"Unfair competition" in N.C. car market

An N.C. Senate bill would prohibit direct marketing to N.C. motorists by Tesla and companies like it. Is this a sound policy?
