The Style Depot, a salon located in Jefferson Station, gave free hair cuts and stylings to 22 occupational students from the Ashe County High School on Thursday.
“I really love doing this; the kids are a lot of fun and we have a blast,” said Shane Little, the owner of the Style Depot since it’s opening in 2005. He also said “the public needs to see we’re giving back to the community.”
According to Little, this marked the sixth year of this unique way of giving back. The idea was originally suggested to Little by Suzie Lyall. Little replied by saying “we’re game.”
“Since then, we’ve had a running appointment with the students on the first Thursday of every December,” said Little.
“The kids really look forward to coming each year,” said Jennifer Treva, a teacher from the Ashe County High School that works with students in the occupational course of study.
“Lately, we’ve been working on job interview skills, and having their hair styled gives the kids alot more confidence,” said Treva.
According to Treva, this benefit is the only field trip allowed by the high school during December because of the upcoming exams.
Thursday’s benefit lasted from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., and a total of 22 students had their hair rinsed, cut, or styled. Some even added color to their hair.
Anita Ferguson, another teacher for the occupational students at the high school, accompanied her students to the Style Depot on Thursday.
“I greatly appreciate what Shane and the folks from the Style Depot do for the kids,” said Ferguson.
