Central Davidson broke open a 2-2 game in the fifth inning against Ashe County to defeat the Lady Huskies in the first round of the 2A state playoffs. Central won the contest, 6-2.
“We were two fairly evenly matched teams,” said head coach Bill Key. “I thought we played a good game.”
A controversial play in the fifth inning allowed Central Davidson to load the bases, and eventually bring all three runs in with a double. Ashe shortstop Olivia Thore fielded a grounder, but a Central Davidson runner crashed into Thore and knocked her down. However, base runner interference was not called, allowing for all three runners to be safe.
Makenzie Wallace finished 2-3 at the plate for Ashe. Sloan Elliott was 1-3 with a stolen base and a run scored. Chelsea Reavis was 1-3 with a double and an RBI and pitcher Brianna McCoy added a sacrifice fly RBI.
On the mound, McCoy pitched six innings and gave up four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Defensively, the Lady Huskies made three errors.
Ashe finished with a final record of 6-12 overall.
Ashe will have to replace three starting seniors and five seniors overall on next year’s squad. Shortstop Olivia Thore, catcher Chelsea Reavis and first baseman Anna Wooten, as well as bench players Taylor Price and Katie Girtman.
