Newton-Conover just had too many offensive weapons for the Huskies to contain as the Red Devils advanced to the second round of the 2AA state playoffs with a 49-0 victory.
Ashe entered the game already shorthanded with Jonathan Cox sitting out due to an injury.
The Red Devils scored twice in the first quarter. Kevin Cline scrambled for a five-yard touchdown run with 4:52 remaining in the quarter. Chandler Johnson booted the extra point to take an early 7-0. On the final play of the quarter, Cline dropped back and tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Josh Ramseur, making the score 14-0.
In the second quarter, Newton-Conover’s defense got the third touchdown of the day. Linebacker Jordan Martin picked off a pass from Conner Bowers and returned it 24-yards for a touchdown.
The final first-half score came on a 28-yard TD pass from Cline to Sam Avis, giving the Red Devils a 28-0 lead at the halftime break.
Newton-Conover added three more touchdowns in the second half, including an 11-yard TD run from Marquis Pope late in the game to seal the victory.
The Red Devils will move on to the second round to face Bandys after the Trojans blasted East Burke 34-7 in its first round contest.
For Ashe, the season ends with a 4-8 overall record. The future looks very bright for the football program though. Ashe will return several key players from his year’s team, including Cox, Bowers, wide receivers Jacob Blevins and Grayson Gilley, tight end and linebacker Cullen Ashley, and secondary standouts Michael Elliott and Matthew Hamilton. The junior varsity team, which finished the season as the Mountain Valley Conference champions, will also send some talented players to the varsity team next season.
