Huskies set to battle Rams

For a team that has thoroughly dominated its conference opponents for the last five years, the Starmount Rams hardly ever get any recognition as being one of the top football programs in the state.

The Rams will enter this Friday’s contest on a 35-game winning streak in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. However, Starmount will have to face the team that last beat them, and the Huskies will certainly be hungry to end this impressive streak of victories. The Huskies traveled to Starmount on Oct. 19, 2007 and handed the Rams a 24-21 defeat.

Since then, it has been an outstanding run of wins to go along with five consecutive MVAC championships.

Starmount will be led by a pair of athletes that have split time at the quarterback position this season. The “dual quarterback” system features seniors Trey Money and Samuel Stone.

Joining them in the backfield will be all-conference performer Chaston Martin. Martin was one of the leading rushers in the area last year, which earned him recognition on the MVAC All-Conference team.

On defense, Zach Worley and Michael Wood will lead the charge from their defensive line positions. Both athletes made the defensive all-conference team a year ago, and are a huge reason why the Rams have the top defense in the MVAC right now. Starmount has surrendered just 24 points this season in its four games, and have allowed only three points in the two conference games so far.

Ashe found an offensive groove last week, scoring a season-high 41 points while getting contributions from several underclassmen, including a touchdown reception from junior Grayson Gilley and a pair of bone crushing blocks by Alex Laws that helped spring the Ashe offense for two big plays.

Quarterback Eli Gambill finished with three rushing touchdowns, two passing touchdowns and nearly 250 yards of total offense.

Jonathan Cox had a huge game with 230 rushing yards, 77 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.

As a whole, the Husky offense exploded for 467 total yards with 348 on the ground and 119 in the air.

Defensively, Carson Knight led the way with six tackles. Michael Elliott and Hunter Scott each added five takedowns and Dominic Maxwell had four tackles and a forced fumble. Cox, Cullen Ashley, Parker Dunne and Justin Scarborough added three tackles and Matthew Hamilton had two tackles and an interception last week.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. from Starmount High School in Boonville. Live play-by-play can be heard on 580 WKSK.

Forbush at North Wilkes

Mount Airy at West Stokes
