West Jefferson will become a hotbed of fast-paced commerce from the past when antiques venders descend upon the town for the inaugural West Jefferson Olde Time Antiques Fair.
The West Jefferson Business Association is hosting the all-day antiques fair, which will be held from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 on the Backstreet. This will be held in concurrence with an Art on the Mountain event to showcase artists.
Keith Woodie is the owner of Antiques on Main and is a board member for the West Jefferson Business Association. Woodie said this antiques fair has been in the works for a couple of years and he is glad to see it finally happen.
Antiques and food vendors are currently being sought to participate in the fair. Woodie said that he is hoping for over 50 venders on the day of the fair. Out of that, he expects six to eight food venders and the rest will be selling antiques and collectibles.
As of Wednesday, 26 venders have already signed up. The deadline for vendor application is Friday, Sept. 7.
According to Woodie, the fair will have two major entertainment events, one of which will be a well-known gospel band. In the future, Woodie would like to see the event become as big as or bigger than Christmas in July.
When asked what he is the most excited about, Woodie said, “I’ve been working with antiques all of my life, so it’s exciting to see an antiques event.”
Even more so, Woodie is excited by the potential impact the fair will have on local businesses. “The main focus is to help the town,” he said.
Woodie expects that the fair will bring people downtown to shop in local stores, eat at local restaurants, and perhaps deliver visitors to local hotels. For this reason, he hopes the businesses in West Jefferson will hold promotions for the event.
