Elkin did most of its damage on just one swing of the bat in the fifth inning, and were able to hang on for a 4-2 conference victory over the Huskies.
The Elks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning when a double from Jamey Cranford scored Seth Haynes.
The big momentum swing of the game came in the fifth inning. Frank Miller crushed a three-run homer to left that scored Haynes and Cranford to jump ahead 4-0 late in the contest.
Ashe quickly answered in the bottom half of the fifth. Jamie Weaver was hit by a pitch and then Alex Laws reached on an infield single to put two guys on with no outs.
After a groundout allowed both runners to move up a base, senior catcher Carson Knight smacked a single to right field to bring in Weaver. Cameron Guyton was next at the plate, and he hit a hard grounder to left field to bring in Laws and cut the Elkin lead in half at 4-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Huskies were able to get the tying run on base. Brandon Carpenter singled then Laws hit a line drive single to center with two outs. With two on, Joe Richardson hit a hard grounder but it was right at the Elkin first baseman to retire the side.
Elkin got its first two hitters on base in the top of the seventh inning, looking to add on to its lead. The Huskies would have none of that though as the team turned a double play to get both lead runners out, thanks to some slick defensive play from Laws and Matthew Hamilton.
In the last plate appearance of the night, Ashe tried to rally for the tie. Knight struck out swinging before Guyton drew a walk. With the tying run at the plate, Jonathan Barlow’s grounder to shortstop turned into a game-ending double play.
Ashe saw its record drop to 4-10 overall and 4-10 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
The Huskies will be back on the diamond at home on Tuesday against North Wilkes.
