North Wilkes moved to 6-0 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference with an impressive 72-43 win over the Lady Huskies on Tuesday.
North opened the game scoring 14 of the first 16 points, including five from leading scorer Jackie Denny and a pair of three-point shots from Allie Church. Ashe scored five points in the quarter with two coming from Chelsea Reavis, two more from Emily Flanagan and a free throw from Abby Lopp. The Lady Vikings held a 19-5 lead after one.
Ashe started the second quarter strong with a 9-4 run to get back into a single-digit deficit at 23-14. Flanagan scored five of those nine while Paige Spell and Hallie Brown each added short jumpers to force a timeout by North with 5:10 remaining in the quarter.
The Lady Vikings answered the bell out of the timeout with nine straight points, and 19 points total in the last five minutes to take a commanding 42-19 lead at the half.
North held a big lead the rest of the way to get the win, snapping Ashe’s four-game winning streak.
Ashe saw its overall record fall to 7-6 and 5-2 in conference. North Wilkes improved to 10-1 overall and 6-0 in MVAC play.
Flanagan led Ashe with 13 points. Reavis finished with six, Victoria Reed added five, Brown had four points, Spell had four points and Morgan Hudler scored four. Ashton Lee chipped in three points, Alexis Parks added three points and Lopp finished with one free throw.
Denny led all scorers with 19. Church scored 13, Taylor Wyatt had 13 and Britney Escobar added 10.
Ashe will travel to West Wilkes on Friday night to wrap up the first half of conference play.
