The Ashe County Board of Education and Central Office kicked off National Education Week at Mountain View Elementary on Tuesday afternoon with a celebration honoring teachers.
“There were folks that had the foresight back in 1919 to know how important education is, so they wanted to set aside a time to spotlight education, and they chose the week before Thanksgiving. That’s what we’re doing here this week. From us, it’s just a small way of saying how much we appreciate what you do,” said Phyllis Yates, a representative of the Ashe County Schools Central Office.
Yates went on to praise teachers as she said, “You have a fantastic job before you, you touch lives, you make such a difference. I think it’s even more important right now to spotlight education and let the leaders in our nation know how important public education is….You work hard, your hearts are in the right place, and I know that because I can look at your test scores and tell where your heart is—and all that does is benefit our children. As a representative from the central office, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
Representing the Board of Education, C.B. Jones said, “It’s certainly an honor to be here to honor you on National Education Week. From the board, we’re very supportive and very pleased with how our teachers and staff are doing. We realize the restrictions and the difficulty you face especially with the financial problems and we want you to know that the board of education’s utmost concern is the classroom and we’re going to protect that the best we can and as long as we can. Thank you again for all your hard work, and we appreciate you.”
Mountain View Principal David Blackburn expressed his appreciation, on behalf of the school, for the support of the county office and the board.
