Last year, a mild winter allowed spring sports to get started on time. This year, it has been an entirely different story.
So far, the only team not affected by this has been the men’s golf team because their season does not start until the final week of March. Otherwise, every team has had to deal with some form of postponement, cancellation, as well as practicing indoors.
The Husky baseball and softball teams had a pair of games from last week postponed. The baseball and softball games at North Surry, originally scheduled for Feb. 28 were cancelled and will not be rescheduled. The tennis team saw its match at Forbush get moved as well. The track team also had to postpone its first meet of the season at West Wilkes.
This week, things have been even worse. The tennis team did get a match played on Monday, and the soccer team was able to travel to Forbush to play on Monday as well. Otherwise, everything else through Wednesday was either moved to a later date, or cancelled entirely.
Wednesday’s baseball and softball games at West Caldwell will not be rescheduled since it is a non-conference game. The first home soccer match of the season was supposed to be played on Wednesday. Instead, it will be played on March 13. Finally, the tennis match scheduled at home against East Wilkes will be moved to March 20.
It does appear the weather will improve after this rain and snow event, at least for a few days anyway. Friday’s baseball, softball and soccer games at Starmount appear to be safe from postponements.
