The Mountain Valley Athletic Conference wrestling tournament is rapidly approaching, this Saturday to be exact, and the Huskies look to have several guys competing for championships in their respective weight classes.

Michael Elliott, who is currently a perfect 36-0 this season, is certainly the favorite in the 145-pound division with his outstanding season so far.

Ashe will also have good chances at 170 pounds with Lucas Miller (26-3) and at 182 pounds with William Miller (27-5). Justin Scarborough, who is currently 21-8 on the year, will be competing at 195.

Elsewhere in the conference, defending champions West Wilkes will be tough to beat once again. 138-pounder Jorge Lima has just two losses this year, one of which was to Elliott just two weeks ago. Brandon Reynolds is 18-3 in the 106-pound division and Eithen Sheets is 22-7 at 285 pounds. At 126 pounds, former Ashe wrestler and current Blackhawk grappler Jake St. Germain holds a 20-6 mark while Hayden Sutphin currently sits at 22-7 in the 170-pound class.

East Wilkes has a trio of guys who could all earn championships this coming weekend. 195-pounder Zack Faircloth is 44-7 on the season, 152-pounder Cody Mathis is 49-4 and 132-pounder Zack Prevette is 42-2 this year

Neighboring Alleghany features the top 120-pound grappler this year. Ty Franklin holds a 33-4 mark and is undefeated in MVAC matches. Taylor Nester is one of the top 220-pounders in the conference with a 34-5 record.

Austin Joines at 220 pounds and Dylan Gentry at 182 pounds are arguably the top wrestlers for Elkin’s squad. Joines maintains a record of 21-9 while Gentry is 22-8.

At Wilkes Central, Parker Ward will one of the top challengers to Elliott in the 145-pound division. Earlier in the season, Elliott beat Ward by an 8-2 decision. Overall, Ward is 36-9. Central’s Juan Castro holds a 31-10 mark at 113 pounds and Cole Susi has 35 wins wrestling at 138 pounds. 285-pounder Kasain Tillman has a 24-2 mark and has been unbeaten in MVAC matches.

Starmount’s Michael Wood has spent most of the season wrestling at 182 and has been incredibly tough to defeat. He holds a 32-1 record this year with that one loss coming earlier in the season to Forbush grappler Dylan Edwards. Edwards is one of the few bright spots for a struggling Forbush team that holds an overall team record of 3-22.

North Wilkes has put a solid season together and has a group of top contenders in several weight classes. Junior Dakota Bell is 41-4 at 285 pounds, but two of those losses have come to Tillman of Wilkes Central. Dustin Wagoner is 32-9 in the 160-pound class, Lucas Smoot is 37-4 in the 113-pound division and Jose Aguilar is 38-7 wrestling at 106 pounds.

The 2013 MVAC Tournament will be held at West Wilkes this Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

"Unfair competition" in N.C. car market

An N.C. Senate bill would prohibit direct marketing to N.C. motorists by Tesla and companies like it. Is this a sound policy?
