The worst of the wet weather is behind us, said a meterologist with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., Tuesday morning.
“Rainfall will be dramatically tapering off,” said the NWS’s Mike Sporer.
Sporer said a cold front will be moving in from the west this afternoon bringing slightly cooler temperatures and clearing skies.
However, while the storm was roaring through Monday night and Tuesday, morning local areas saw significant amounts of rainfall and some high winds, including one gust clocked this morning in Laurel Springs at 49 mph.
The amount of rainfall depended on the area of the county. According to the NWS, the weather recording station in Jefferson had reported 4.7 inches of rain. In Todd, 2.88 inches of rain. In Transou, 2.82 inches. And in Creston, 2.49 inches. Those were the totals at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
A spokesman with the NWS in Blacksburg expected some of the totals to increase significantly after today’s rain.
“We could see well over six inches in some areas,” said the spokesman.
Despite the heavy rain, Sporer said the county was able to withstand a significant rain event because of the dry weather over the last 10 days.
“It has been so dry a lot of the rain was absorbed into the ground so it wasn’t as bad as it could have been,” said Sporer.
According to the NWS, the weather for the rest of today is: Showers with a slight chance of thunderstorms. Some thunderstorms may produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Near steady temperature in the upper 50s. West winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain near 100 percent.
Tonight: Mostly cloudy. A chance of showers…mainly in the evening. Cooler with lows in the upper 40s. Northwest winds around 10 mph. Chance of rain 40 percent.
Wednesday: Mostly sunny. Highs in the lower 60s. North winds around 10 mph.
