An opening day loss to Watauga appears to be nothing but a distant memory now. The Ashe County Huskies have reeled off eight straight wins, including a mercy rule win over North Wilkes on Monday and a big 7-1 win against Starmount on Tuesday.

Ashe 10, North Wilkes 1

Cesar Ruiz had a huge game for Ashe, recording the hat trick and adding an assist to lead the Husky offense.

The first Ashe goal came from Alexis Ramos in the third minute of play. Just one minute later, Ruiz scored his first of the night with the assist going to Miguel Ramos.

Senior Anthony Federico was responsible for the next two Ashe goals. Federico’s first goal came in the 10th minute with the assist going to Ruiz. His second goal came 14 minutes later with M. Ramos tallying the assist.

North Wilkes finally got on the scoreboard in the 27th minute with Juan Benitez beating keeper Braxton Treadway for the goal on a free kick.

The final first half goal was from A. Ramos in the 38th minute. Senior Lucas Zeller was there for the assisting pass. Ashe took a 5-1 lead to the halftime break.

Second half play started with Ruiz’s second goal of the game, this one in the 47th minute. M. Ramos added his first goal of the game in the 51st minute to give the Huskies a 7-1 advantage.

Just two minutes later, Ruiz finished off the hat trick with his third goal. Frank Ledezma was there for the assist.

In the 59th minute, Ashe got its ninth goal from M. Ramos, his second of the contest.

The final goal came in the 61st minute from Alex Church, which made the score 10-1 and brought on the mercy rule instituted for high school soccer games in North Carolina starting this season.

North Wilkes dropped to 2-6-1 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Ashe 7, Starmount 1

The Huskies were right back at it on Tuesday, this time at home against the Starmount Rams. Ashe was off to great start in the very first minute of play when Ruiz notched his first score of the contest.

Defense set the tone after that with two big saves from Treadway to keep Starmount off the board. The Ram defense was just as strong as their keeper stopped scoring attempts from Jamie Weaver, Ledezma and Zeller.

Ashe did connect on one more scoring shot in the half on a terrific pass from Ledezma to Ruiz for his second score in the 39th minute.

The Huskies broke things wide open early in the second half. Ledezma scored in the 44th minute, then followed that up with a penalty shot goal in the 47th minute.

Miguel Ramos tallied his first goal of the night in the 63rd minute off of another nice pass, this one from Weaver.

Ledezma capped off his strong performance with a hat trick goal in the 68th minute.

The final Ashe tally came from M. Ramos in the 73rd minute to make the score 7-0. Starmount scored a goal in the final two minutes of play to keep from being shutout.

With these two victories, the Huskies improved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

The Huskies will open play next week with a home match against Wilkes Central on Monday, and a big road contest at Forbush on Thursday.
