The North Carolina High School Athletic Association is celebrating 100 years of existence, and most recently, the association released the top 100 administrators in history.
Ashe County High School Athletic Director Marc Payne was chosen to be part of that distinguished list.
“It’s humbling to be placed in a group with all the folks I was placed with. Many of them are hall of famers,” said Payne. “In an effort to celebrate 100 years of the NCHSAA, I was very honored to be considered for this.”
Payne coached high school basketball for 37 years and collected 574 wins along the way with coaching stops at Beaver Creek High School, Watauga High School and of course ACHS. Payne also served on the board of directors for the North Carolina Coaches Association, the NCHSAA and the North Carolina Athletic Director’s Association.
There were several other prominent names that appeared on the list, including Jack Groce, who was the AD at Watauga when Payne made the move from Beaver Creek to Watauga to coach basketball. Groce also never had a losing season coaching football for 20 years at Watauga. Also, former NCHSAA executive director Charlie Adams made the list. Adams was in charge of the NCHSAA from 1984 until 2010.

Coming soon, the NCHSAA will release the top 100 coaches, female athletes and male athletes in history as well. The coaching list will be released on June 15, the female athlete list on July 15 and the male athlete list on September 1.
