In an act of generosity, a sewing group called “Stitches of Love” has donated their time in order to make tote bags for new mothers and donate them to Ashe Memorial Hospital.
“We’ve had very good responses from people so far, and we’ve managed to accomplish a lot with practically no funding,” said Judy Hawks, founder of “Stitches of Love.”
Hawks formed the group from members of Bald Mountain Baptist Church nearly two years ago as a knitting class. Initially, the group spent its time crocheting and knitting for recreation. The class began to grow as more and more women wanted to learn how to knit and crochet.
Eventually, the group began sewing and quilting for various causes. “Last year, we started sewing and quilting bed-runners for nursing homes,” said Hawks.
When the group checked the needs for the hospital, they discovered the hospital needed tote bags for new mothers.
The group took time off over the summer and returned in August with a new goal: they began sewing tote bags for the hospital. From August to October, the group managed to sew 45 tote bags.
On Sunday, Oct. 21, R.D. Williams, Ashe Memorial Hospital’s chief executive officer, visited Bald Mountain Baptist Church to accept the gift of 45 new tote bags on behalf of the hospital.
“We’re still a small operation, but we’ve been getting support and contributions from several people from the community, whether they helped us financially or donated fabric,” said Hawks.
Ashe Memorial Hospital usually has between 125 to 140 births per year. According to Hawks, the “Stitches of Love” class is on pace to make at least that many tote bags over the next year.
“I foresee us continuing to help others,” said Hawks. She also said “each time we do something, we feel better about ourselves. We’ve discovered that blessings reap blessings.”
