A strong defensive effort in the second half from Watauga helped the Lady Pioneers pick up a 47-33 victory over Ashe. Watauga held Ashe to just 12 points in the final 16 minutes and pulled away after holding a slim lead at the half.

The Lady Huskies started off strong with a three-pointer from Morgan Hudler and a free throw from Chelsea Reavis. Watauga tied the score up with a layup from Savanna Wood and a pair of free throws from Hannah Margolis. The Lady Pioneers continued its scoring spurt with a layup from Clare Morris and a three-point basket from Wood to take a 9-4 lead and force a timeout from Lady Husky coach Laura Foster.

Ashe came out of the timeout and scored the final four points of the quarter. Paige Spell hit a free throw and freshman Ashton Lee swished a long three-pointer to pull to within one point after the first quarter.

The second quarter started with Watauga pushing its lead back to seven points at 17-10. However, Ashe continued to battle strong with six points in the final four minutes from Abby Lopp and another three-point bucket from Lee. The Lady Pioneers held a 23-21 advantage at the half.

The Lady Pioneers started the third with a three-point play from Margolis. Ashe got a layup from Emily Flanagan and a short jump shot from Spell. Watauga ended the quarter on a 6-0 run with four points from Margolis and a basket from Kaelin McNeill. Ashe trailed by seven points going to the fourth.

In the fourth, Watauga slowly began to pull away. Harris nailed a three-pointer and Margolis scored yet again to push the lead up to 12 points.

Reavis answered with a three-pointer of her own and Spell converted one of two from the free throw line to make the score 37-29.

Watauga closed the fourth quarter on a 10-4 run to seal the victory which included another three-pointer from Harris and four points from Wood.

The Lady Huskies fell to 0-3 on the season. Watauga remained undefeated at 3-0.

Margolis led all scorers with 15 points. Harris finished with 12 and Wood had 10.

Lee was the leading scorer for Ashe with eight points off the bench. Spell and Lopp each finished with six points. Reavis had four points, Hudler added three points, Flanagan, Vic Reed and Hallie Brown rounded out Ashe’s night with two points each.

"Unfair competition" in N.C. car market

An N.C. Senate bill would prohibit direct marketing to N.C. motorists by Tesla and companies like it. Is this a sound policy?
