Commissioner Larry Rhodes was nominated as chairman of the Ashe County Board of Commissioners during the boards organizational meeting on Monday, Dec. 3.
The former board chair Judy Porter Poe made a motion to nominate Rhodes, and Commissioner William Sands seconded the motion. Rhodes was nominated after a 4-1 vote from the board, with Commissioner Gerald Price dissenting.
Although Poe is no longer the board chair, she was elected as its vice-chair after a 3-2 vote, with commissioners Price and Gary Roark dissenting.
“I never would have dreamed of doing this when I was younger,” said Poe about her time as Ashe County’s BOC chair. She also said “to be the first female chair in history was something else.”
“I’ll continue to work for this county because this is my home; this is where my friends and family are” said Poe.
After the meeting, Rhodes expressed his gratitude towards Poe.
“I appreciate the time and work Commissioner Poe has put into the job as chair for the past four years. She has handle the job well and spent many hours in meetings,traveling and research to give the best results possible. As the new vice chair, I will depend upon her to continue to represent Ashe County in many events and keep me informed of her learnings from these meetings,” said Rhodes.
Rhodes also said his new position as board chair comes with added responsibilities, which are more demanding on his time.
“I will need to prepare more for each regular meeting and review new items being discussed and placed on the agenda, and items resulting from present situations or upcoming events,” said Rhodes after the meeting.
Rhodes also said the boards success would require a “team effort” from the board.
During Mondays meeting, the board also voted to re-instate John Kilby as Ashe County’s attorney and Ann Clark as the county’s clerk. Both were re-instated with 5-0 votes.
The final order of business for the organizational session was bonding the sheriff, the register of deeds and the tax collector each. The setting of bond and the rules of procedure for the board were both adopted in a 5-0 vote.
Once the organizational session ended, other appointments were also made.
• Deatte Roten was officially appointed as the new register of deeds in a 5-0 vote.
• Elliot Bigman, Jeff Badger and Tom Fowler were appointed to the Airport Advisory Board in a 5-0 vote.
• George Rembert was appointed to the Economic Development Commission in a 5-0 vote.
During the meeting, the board also approved a resolution designating Dec. 3-Dec. 7, as “Industry Appreciation Week.
“Therefore, be it resolved, that the Ashe County Board of Commissioners declared Dec. 3 through Dec. 7, 2012, as industry appreciation week in recognition of the many contributions of local industry to the Ashe County economy and to the community at large,” read the resolution.
The final order of business for Mondays meeting was selecting a voting delegate for the Legislative Goals Conference. The board selected Poe.
