Volunteers have made an impact in Ashe County this holiday season.
The Ashe County Volunteer Initiative Canned Food Drive collected over 800 items by the project’s conclusion on Dec. 10.
“I would like to extend a huge thank you to those who were drop off locations, those who donated to the drive, and to the volunteers who helped sort donations and deliver them,” said Volunteer Coordinator Glenda Luther.
Luther said she would also like to thank Boondocks Grill and Pub for making a “significant donation” to the canned food drive.
Donations were accepted at Ingles, Lowes Foods, Food Lion, Ashe Memorial Hospital, Ashe Services for Aging, Wilkes Community College (Ashe Campus), Dollar General Store, Ashe Optometric Eye Care, Ashe County Public Library, and Riverview Community Center.
The donations were distributed among local food banks including Ashe Services for Aging, The Sharing Center, Ashe Really Cares, A Safe Home for Everyone, and Ashe Outreach Ministries.
David Blackburn, the president of the Ashe Baptist Association, would also like to thank the volunteers who helped to make the Ashe County Children’s Christmas Project possible.
“On behalf of the Ashe County Children’s Christmas Project, and the 1,001 needy children of Ashe County, we would like to say thank you to all the folks who gave time, money, gifts and talents to make this incredible ministry happen,” said Blackburn.
“Because of what you have done, a lot of children in Ashe County will be happy on Christmas morning.”
First Citizens Bank also spread holiday cheer with a toy and food drive for local charities during the bank’s customer appreciation day on Monday, Dec. 3.
According to Amy Welch, FCB’s financial services manager, bank associates also privately contributed funds to brighten the holiday season for families in the community.
The bank will provide refreshments to its customers until it closes at 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
