An accident involving three vehicles at the intersection of U.S. 221 and Mount Jefferson Road just before 5 p.m. this afternoon injured two motorists and brought traffic to a standstill for nearly an hour.
One of the vehicles, a white SUV, was flipped on the driver’s side, and was beginning to catch fire when emergency responders arrived at the scene and stopped the blaze with hand-held fire extinguishers.
Two passengers in the SUV were taken by ambulance to Ashe Memorial Hospital. No information is available on their condition at this time. The N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
