The men’s tennis team dropped their first match of the week against East Wilkes on Wednesday but bounced back to take down Forbush on Friday.
East Wilkes made the trip up the mountain and left with an 8-1 victory.
Teams once again had to battle the winter weather elements with temperatures in the low 40’s and winds gusting between 30 and 40 mph.
Cardinal top seed Greyland Cleary and Ashe top seed Sam Bowers battled through a third set tiebreaker. Bowers beat Cleary in the first set, 6-4, but fell in the second set 1-6. The tiebreaker also went in favor of Cleary, getting the win 10-3.
In the battle of second seeded players, East’s Dillon Shew was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Lucas Zeller.
Ashe got a win in the third seed match. Een Shepherd beat Jeffrey Haynes 6-1, 3-6, 10-8.
The remaining three matches were all Cardinal victories. Luke Patterson was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Jacob Oneal, Triston Davis beat Andrew Shepherd, 6-2, 6-1 and Sam Swanner was a 6-1, 6-0 winner against Jake Harrington.
East Wilkes went 3-0 in doubles matches. Cleary and Shew were 8-2 winners against Bowers and Zeller. Haynes and Patterson defeated E. Shepherd and Oneal, 8-2 while Davis and Swanner beat A. Shepherd and Travis Stanley by an 8-0 score.
“The match was closer than the score indicated,” said head coach Larry Dix. “I thought the teams were pretty evenly matched but the ball just did not fall our way.”
Ashe was able to bounce back to pick up a 5-4 victory at Forbush on Friday evening.
Up next, the tennis team will host Wilkes Central on Wednesday, a match rescheduled from last week.
