Blue Ridge Elementary student, Emily Huskins, was recognized at the 2013 Young Authors celebration held on March 9 at the Raleigh Convention Center.
“It felt really good and exciting,” Huskins said of her recognition. “They gave me a medal and a copy of the book the story was published in.”
Huskin’s work is entitled “Mr. Mean Fox Plays Twister,” and tells the story of a group of animals who rid themselves of a fox by tricking him into playing a game of Twister.
Her writing entry was published in this year’s Young Authors collection. Young Authors is a project of the North Carolina Reading Association chaired by Tonnye Fletcher.
Each year, local reading councils select from writing submitted by teachers in their area. Nearly 400 students were published in this year’s book. Over 1000 attendees came to the Raleigh Convention Center celebrate these achievements.
The Young Authors A celebration featured Allan Wolf, a North Carolina author, poetry slam champion, and author of poetry and prose, including Zane’s Trace.
The theme for the 2012-2013 Young Authors Project theme was “Play that Game!” The authors were encouraged to write about games they play, inside and out; games played when they were younger, games shared with family and friends, where they learned valuable lessons about working together, and about winning and losing gracefully.
