The passing attack may not be the biggest part of the Lenoir-Rhyne offense, but when the ball was in the air, you could bet Greyson Wells was in the area.
The former Husky led the Bears in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches this season, one of the most successful football campaigns in school history. Lenoir-Rhyne captured the 2012 South Atlantic Conference Championship and made a postseason appearance for the first time in 50 years. The Bears’ 9-3 record was the best single season mark since L-R went 11-1 in 1962.
Lenoir-Rhyne had a prolific rushing attack this season, averaging 376 yards per game, which greatly limited the number of passes the Bears actually threw. L-R threw the ball just 80 times in 12 games.
Wells finished the season with 10 catches for 217 yards and two touchdowns. His biggest game of the season came in a loss to Carson-Newman back in September when he reeled in four catches for 102 yards.
The first of his two touchdown receptions came on a 35-yard pass in a big 51-6 blowout win over Tusculum. Wells’ final TD reception was a key grab in the fourth quarter over Mars Hill. The Bears went on to beat Mars Hill, 34-21. That touchdown from Wells gave L-R a 10-point advantage and capped off a huge comeback victory. Mars Hill held a 21-3 lead halfway through the third quarter.
The 2012 season came to a close in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs with a 38-35 loss to Carson-Newman.
