Ashe’s track teams traveled to Mitchell County last week and came away with a first and second place finish overall.
The men’s team held on by one-half point to take first place. Ashe finished with 119.5 points. McDowell was second with 119 points, Mitchell placed third with 113.5 points and Carolina Day School was fourth with a final tally of 63 points. Mountain Heritage (62) was fifth followed by Asheville Christian Academy (51), Avery (37) and Madison (28.)
In the women’s meet, McDowell won with an overall score of 153.33. Ashe was second with 145.33 points, well ahead of third place Mitchell who scored 66.83 points. Fourth place went to Asheville Christian (57) followed by Mountain Heritage (51.5), Avery (41) and Madison (8).
In relay events, the women’s team took second in the 4x100 while the men captured first place with a time of 47.39 seconds, beating McDowell to the line in just under one second. The women finished first in the 4x400 relay with a time of 5:13, a full 12 seconds ahead of second place.
The Huskies ran well in hurdles events once again. Erin Bingham took first place in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 17.26 seconds. Bingham also finished first in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 48.20 seconds.
Jacob Blevins was first in the men’s 110 hurdles, beating Chase Stevens by .07 seconds. Blevins finished in 16.52 seconds. Zach Outen won another close hurdles event for Ashe. Outen won the 300 hurdles in a time of 45.48 seconds, beating Salvador Ortiz who crossed the line in 48.53 seconds.
In the 100-meter dash, Haley Richardson earned fifth place with a finishing time of 14.25 seconds. Trinity Bost was eighth and Makayla Hartzog was ninth. On the men’s side, Blevins was second in 11.52 seconds and Austin Bennett grabbed fifth in 11.95 seconds.
The team continued to do well in the long distance events. Victoria Reed and Alexes Armstrong finished first and second in the mile run. Garreth Berry was fifth in the men’s mile event. Ashe also had five runners place in the two-miler. Armstrong won the event for the women in a time of 15:07. Sophie Wolfe was third in 15:45. On the men’s side, Berry placed second in 11:24, Germain Horodyski was fifth in 12:26 and Helmer Alverez was sixth with a time of 12:45.
Amber Hare placed second in the 400-meter dash. Taylor Kripps was fifth and Bost finished ninth. RJ Burke grabbed sixth in the men’s race while Victor Melo took eighth and Landon Bush grabbed ninth.
In the 800, the women had three runners earn points. Reed won the event in 2:54. Kripps finished fifth with a time of 3:11 and Kaylen Chapman was eighth, crossing the line in 3:23.
Bingham scored her third win of the day in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 27.38 seconds. Outen and Bennett finished third and fourth in the men’s event.
In field events, Madison Little won the discus with a throw of 95 feet, 11 inches, a full 18 feet ahead of second place Haley Woody from Avery. Little placed second in the shotput with a toss of 30 feet, eight inches.
Bradon Wingler and Parker Dunne finished sixth and seventh in the men’s shot put. Both of their throws measured in at 38 feet, two inches. In the men’s discus, Wingler was second with a throw of 114 feet, four inches. Mitchell Brown grabbed eighth with a throw of 101 feet.
Paige Spell took second in the women’s high jump and Richardson grabbed sixth in the women’s long jump.
Ashe had three men place in the long jump. Blevins won the event with a leap of 19 feet. Hunter Argetsinger ended up in third place with a jump of 16 feet, four inches and Tyler Church finished in eighth with a leap of 13 feet, eight inches.
Bennett grabbed the final Ashe victory of the day with a 35-foot leap in the triple jump.
