Ashe lost a heartbreaker to Starmount in the final regular season tennis match, falling by a final of 6-3.
The match was extremely close the entire way. Each singles match from the top seed all the way down to the fourth seed featured at least one tiebreaker during a set. Unfortunately, only one of those matches went in Ashe’s favor.
“The team played hard and long. The match lasted over four hours,” said head coach Larry Dix. “I commend the team for their efforts and not giving up.”
Heaven Walters beat Anna Wooten in the battle of number one seeds. Walters took the first set 6-4, but Wooten battled right back and dominated the second set, winning 6-1. In the third and final set, Walters narrowly squeaked out the win, taking a 12-10 tiebreaker.
In the match of second seeded players, Haley Maloney earned a first set tiebreak win, 7-6, then finished the match with a 6-1 victory in the second set.
Lady Husky third seed Maggie Witherspoon won the first set over Miracle Walters, 7-5, but lost the second set and third set in tiebreakers, 6-7, and 7-10.
Starmount’s fourth seed Jordan Shore bounced back to beat Mary Austin Tugman after losing the first set 4-6. Shore took the second set 6-1, then earned a 10-6 tiebreak win in the final set.
Ashe got back on the winning side with a good performance from Hayley Ragland as she beat Madison McClellan in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
The final singles match went in favor of Starmount. Kristeen Nicks was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Ella Copeland.
In doubles action, Wooten and Maloney capped off a perfect regular season with an 8-3 win over H. Walters and Griffen. This gave the duo a 17-0 record on the year.
“I am so proud of what they have accomplished this year in the regular season,” said Coach Dix.
Ashe finished the regular season with a final record of 11-6 overall and 11-5 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference, good enough for fourth place.
“Overall we have had a good winning year. I am proud of this team and their efforts, and for hanging in there with several late changes to the lineup due to injuries and other circumstances,” added Coach Dix.
