A Creston man spent nearly nine hours unconscious in the remains of his destroyed vehicle after an accident late Thursday, Oct. 11, along N.C. 194 between Warrensville and Lansing.
Justin Canter, 20, of Creston, remains in critical condition at Wake Forest Baptist Memorial Hospital after undergoing surgery Friday afternoon.
His injuries came as a result of an accident that is believed to have occurred late Thursday night, Oct. 11, said N.C. Highway Patrolman R.A. Annas.
On Friday morning, at approximatley 10 a.m. residents along Campbell Road in the Lansing community spotted the remains of Canter’s Nissan 300SX, overturned at the edge of the bank of the New River, with Canter still trapped in the vehicle unconscious.
Canter was originally transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital for treatment. He was then moved to Wake Forest Baptist Memorial Hospital early Friday afternoon.
According to Annas, Cantor was traveling north on N.C. 194 when his vehicle left the roadway just where the bridge that crosses the New River off Campbell Road. After slamming into a concrete edge on the bridge, the car became airborne crashing into the ground below, coming to rest at the river’s bank.
There were no skid marks leading up to the scene of the accident
A first responder at the scene said Canter was unconscious, but still alive, when help arrived.
Trooper Annas said charges will be filed against Canter at a later date.
The groups responding to the call included the Warrensville Volunteer Fire Department, members of the Lansing Volunteer Fire Department, the Ashe County Rescue Squad, and Blue Ridge Medical Transport.
