Ashe County made it to the second round of the 2A state playoffs before the season came to an end at West Stokes.
The Lady Huskies’ playoff run started on Thursday with a home game against Randleman.
Ashe’s first scoring chance came in the 11th minute with a shot from Bekah Bowers that was stopped.
Randleman nearly got on the board first, but a nice save from Ashe keeper Chrissy Simmons kept both sides scoreless.
Bowers got Ashe on the board with a kick outside the box that was misplayed by Randleman goalkeeper Jordan Brown.
The score remained 1-0 through the halftime break.
In the second half, Valerie Keys fired a shot that was stopped by Brown on the far post.
Randleman quickly countered and ended up tying the game off of a throw in pass from Briana Carter. Cassi Goode booted the shot by Simmons to tie the game at 1-1.
In the 65th minute, Ashe was awarded two corner kicks, but no shots were made towards the goal.
When it appeared an extra period would be needed to settle the score, Keys came up with her biggest goal of the season, firing a shot by Brown in the 78th minute.
Ashe’s defense kept Randleman’s strikers away from the goal to hang on for the 2-1 victory.
On Saturday, the Lady Huskies traveled to West Stokes for a second round playoff matchup.
The Wildcats came out of the gate with three first-half goals to put Ashe in an early hole.
Things did not get any better in the second half. West Stokes added two more and were able to keep Ashe off the scoreboard to secure the shutout.
Ashe’s season ends with a final record of 15-4-1. West Stokes (16-4-3) moves on to face Cuthbertson (17-2-4) in the third round.
Senior Aspen Domske ended her outstanding career with 102 goals.
