Avery County dropped the Lady Huskies to 0-2 on the year with a 66-48 victory on Tuesday night.
The Lady Vikings jumped out to a quick 11-2 advantage with multiple baskets from Lauren Burleson, Kelsie Clark and Haley Woody.
Ashe battled back getting four points from Morgan Hudler, three from Paige Spell and a basket from Hallie Brown. Avery held a slim 18-13 lead over Ashe going to the second quarter.
Avery extended its lead to 11 points by the halftime break, thanks to good scoring quarters from Clark and Bre Heaton as each scored six points. Ashe trailed 35-24 entering the second half.
A tough Avery defense held the Lady Huskies to just eight points in the third quarter, helping the Vikings pull away down the stretch. Burleson hit back-to-back three-point shots, and baskets from Clark and Heaton gave the Lady Vikings its biggest lead of the night. Ashe trailed 51-32 going to the final quarter of play.
Ashe had its best scoring quarter, putting in 15 points, but could not cut into the Avery lead at all in the final eight minutes, dropping its second non-conference game of the early season.
Heaton finished with 18 points, leading all scorers. Clark added 16 and Burleson finished with 15.
For Ashe, Spell got the nod for highest point total with 10. Hudler and Chelsea Reavis added seven points apiece. Taylor Price had five points, Brown finished with five, Alexis Parks added four, Ashton Lee finished with three and Victoria Reed also had three points. Abby Lopp and Emily Flanagan rounded out the Ashe scoring with two points each.
The Lady Huskies will be hoping for that first win of the season this Friday at Watauga.
