The sixth annual Ashe County Sports Hall of Fame Ceremony enshrined four more members to join the other outstanding athletes and coaches from previous years.
Chris Barr, Kevin Jones, Jon Jordan and Frank Roland were the 2013 inductees to the prestigious Ashe County Sports HOF.
The speaker for this year’s event was former college basketball head coach Bucky Waters. Waters also spent a season very early in his career coaching at Ashe Central High School. He played basketball at NC State then eventually went on to be a head coach at Duke University and West Virginia.
Waters currently works in broadcasting for ESPN and the MSG Network.
The first inductee was Chris Barr. Barr was a three-year varsity player in football and basketball at Beaver Creek High School from 1989-91
Barr was a two-time all-conference player in football, two-time all-conference player in basketball and was named MVP of the Blue Ridge Conference Tournament in 1991.
Barr went on to Emory and Henry College where he was originally going to play basketball.
However, his heart let him into football at Emory and Henry where he started 16 games at safety and had five career interceptions. Barr was chosen as a team captain his senior year and helped Emory and Henry win the conference championship in both of the seasons he played football.
The second individual honored was Kevin Jones. Jones battled injuries during his high school career that limited him to just two basketball seasons and two football seasons.
On the hardwood, Jones was one of the best for Ashe Central. Jones was a two-time all-conference player, Blue Ridge Conference MVP, High Country Prep Classic MVP and made the Winston-Salem Journal All-Northwest team his senior season.
Jones finished his prep basketball career with 1,127 points in only two seasons of play.
Third on the list of inductees was three-sport athlete Jon Jordan.
Jordan made the Blue Ridge Conference All-Conference team twice for football in 1995 and 1996 and once for basketball in 1997.
In baseball, Jordan was an all-conference performer in each of his three varsity seasons, and was a member of the 1997 1A All-State team.
After high school, Jordan walked on to play football at Wake Forest where he played three seasons. Jordan, a wide receiver, was a starter on special teams his senior season and made the ACC Academic Honor Roll all three seasons.
The final 2013 inductee was Frank Roland. Roland passed away in February and his son Frank accepted the award on his behalf.
Roland was most famous for being one of the key players on the 1940 Riverview High School team that won the Winston-Salem Journal-Sentinel Northwest Basketball Tournament, which is now known as the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic. Roland was the last surviving member of that team.
Roland went on Appalachian State Teachers College and then into the United States Navy.
After returning from the Navy, Roland worked as a mail carrier and eventual post master of the Warrensville Post Office.
Roland continued playing sports however, as he played in the basketball and softball Industrial Leagues. Roland even started playing golf at the age of 72.
Overall, the Ashe County Sports Hall of Fame currently has 27 individual athletes and coaches enshrined in the hall, as well as the 1964-65 Ashe Central basketball team, 1961 Lansing High School football team and the 1962 Lansing High School football team.
