Women’s track wins MVAC title

For the fifth straight season, the Ashe County women’s track team captured the Mountain Valley Conference Championship.

Ashe ran away from the field, finishing with 166.5 points, well ahead of second place West Wilkes (118) and Wilkes Central (82.5). Elkin finished fourth with 77 points, Starmount finished fifth with 72 points and Forbush came in sixth place with 72 points. North Wilkes (36), Alleghany (36) and East Wilkes (29) rounded out the women’s scoring results.

For the men, West Wilkes earned the championship with 155 points. Ashe finished in second place with 113 points, followed by Wilkes Central (94) in third, Forbush (91) in fourth and Elkin (64) in fifth. Starmount finished sixth with 61 points followed by East Wilkes (52), North Wilkes (52) and Alleghany (17).

The conference championship meet started with field events at 1 p.m. and track events at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Madison Little placed second in the women’s shot put with a throw of 30 feet, 10.5 inches. The senior also took second in the discus with a throw of 106 feet, four inches.

In the long jump, Aspen Domske won with a leap of 16 feet, 10 inches. Teammate Hailey Richardson grabbed fourth place with a jump of 14 feet, seven inches. Domske also took the top spot in the triple jump which measured in at 31 feet, eight inches.

Ashe got a third place finish in the women’s high jump from Paige Spell. The sophomore’s jump measured in at four feet, 10 inches.

In the men’s field events, Jacob Blevins won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 11 inches. His jump measured in a full foot ahead of second place Kody King of Elkin. Austin Bennett took third in the triple jump and Ronald Goodlander finished seventh.

Brandon Wingler and Parker Dunne finished fourth and fifth in the discus throw while Dominic Maxwell grabbed eighth place. In the shot put, Dunne grabbed fifth place while Maxwell finished sixth and Jacob Woods placed seventh.

Erin Bingham won the conference crown in both hurdles events. In the 100-meter race, Bingham finished in 15.93 seconds. Spell finished in third with a time of 17.41 seconds. In the 300-meter race, Bingham won when she crossed the line in 48.46 seconds.

In the men’s hurdles, Blevins took first in the 110 race with a time of 16.15 seconds and Zach Outen earned second in the 300 hurdles, crossing the line in 43.43 seconds.

Ashe performed very good in the sprint events to stay near the top of the standings all day long. Bingham took second in the women’s 100-meter dash while Blevins also grabbed second in the men’s race.

Bingham followed that up with a second place run in the 200 dash. Blevins and Bennett finished second and third in the men’s 200.

In the 400-meter dash, Amber Hare was Ashe’s highest finisher, taking third place.

In relay events, the women got a third place finish in the 4x800 race, a third place finish in the 4x200, first place in the 4x100 and fifth place in the 4x400 event.

The men took fourth in the 4x800 relay, sixth in the 4x200 relay, fourth in the 4x100 relay and seventh in the 4x400 relay.

Victoria Reed, Mac Church and Alexes Armstrong finished fourth, sixth and seventh respectively in the women’s mile run. Church also went on to take third in the two-mile event.

Garreth Berry was fourth in the mile run and fourth in the two-mile run.

The track team will now turn its attention to the 2A regional events set to start on May 11.
