Ashe County opened this week with a key 6-3 victory over the visiting Forbush Falcons on Monday.
Both teams are very evenly matched as the previous contest between the two schools was decided by the final match of the day, a 5-4 victory for Ashe.
Ashe and Forbush split the six singles matches, meaning the three doubles matches would decide the winner.
“This was a great win for our team and I am proud of the way they went into the doubles matches with a team effort and a determination to win,” said head coach Larry Dix. “I think this was truly a win for the team and a good lesson in never giving up.”
Forbush scored its wins in the first, fourth and sixth seeded matches. Top seed Alex Sales beat Sam Bowers, 7-5, 6-1. Spencer Brown needed a pair of tiebreak wins to get by Ashe’s Jacob O’Neal. Brown took the first set on a 10-7 tiebreak, then O’Neal bounced back to win the second set, 6-4. The final tiebreak went in Brown’s favor with a 10-5 score. The last Forbush win was by Jared Miller as he knocked off Andrew Shepherd in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Ashe’s Lucas Zeller made fast work of Turner Baity, earning a 6-0, 6-0 win. Een Shephered beat Josh Brown 6-1, 6-0 and Travis Stanley gave Ashe its third win with a 6-1, 7-5 victory.
The Huskies swept all three doubles matches to get the team victory. Bowers and Zeller were 8-4 winners over Sales and S. Brown. Shepherd and O’Neal handled Baity and J. Brown, 8-2 and the duo of Stanley and Jake Harrington scored a 9-8 win in the final match of the day.
Ashe pulled its record up to an even 6-6 overall and 5-6 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
