Senior catcher Carson Knight knocked in three runs, but it would not be enough to get the victory at West Wilkes.
Zach Staley came up with three run-scoring hits and Will Shepherd scored four runs to give the Blackhawks a 9-8 victory.
Ashe held a 6-2 lead after the second inning. Brandon Carpenter knocked in the first run on an infield single. Jamie Weaver drew a bases loaded walk, then Alex Laws reached on a fielder’s choice to put the Huskies ahead, 3-2. Carpenter scored on a wild pitch, then Knight knocked in both Laws and Matthew Hamilton with a single to centerfield.
Staley knocked in two of his three runs in the bottom of the third with a hit to center to make the score 6-4.
West jumped in front in fourth inning with three runs scoring on Ashe County errors.
The Huskies tied the score back up at 7-7 when Walker smacked a single to right that brought in Joe Richardson from second.
The visiting Huskies were able to take a quick lead in the sixth with Knight’s second run-scoring hit of the night, this one a double to deep center that scored Hamilton.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Blackhawks grabbed the final lead change of the game with an RBI single from Tanner Little and a squeeze play executed nicely to bring in the go-ahead run at 9-8.
Ashe was able to get the tying run to third in the top of the seventh, but a double-play grounder ended the threat and the game.
Knight, Walker, Carpenter and Jonathan Barlow each connected on two hits. Knight finished with a team-high three RBI’s while Laws, Walker, Carpenter and Weaver each knocked a run in.
On the mound, Cameron Guyton got the start and pitched all six innings. The senior gave up nine runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Three of those runs were unearned due to five defensive miscues.
Dylan Kilby pitched 5.2 innings in relief of starter Andrew Ortiz who was rocked early after allowing six earned runs on two hits and four walks in just 1.1 innings. Kilby was much better on the mound as he allowed just two more runs the rest of the way.
The Huskies are now 3-5 overall and 3-5 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
Ashe will finally get to play its first home game of the year on Tuesday against Wilkes Central, weather permitting of course.
Soccer
The Lady Husky soccer team grabbed three victories to improve its record to 6-1-1 overall and 6-1 in the MVAC.
Ashe played a tough 4A squad Alexander Central to a 1-1 tie before earning a 6-0 shutout win over North Wilkes and a close 3-2 victory over West Wilkes.
The soccer team is also set to play its first home match of the season on Tuesday against Wilkes Central.
