Anna Blackburn, a sixth-grade student from Mountain View Elementary, won the 2013 Ashe County Schools Spelling Bee which was held February 7, at Ashe County High School. She won by spelling the word “exportation” correctly. Anns is the daughter of David and Kathy Blackburn.
Runner-up was 7th-grader Ellie Swibold from Ashe County Middle School.
Eleven elementary and middle school students competed for the honor of representing Ashe County Schools in the Regional Spelling Bee in Winston-Salem at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts.
Participants in this year’s County-Wide Spelling Bee were:
Blue Ridge Elementary: Neil Pate, Alle Cornejo and Cristina Pruitt
Ashe County Middle School: Ellie Swibold and Megan Howell
Mountain View Elementary: Jacob Wingler, Hannah Phillips and Anna Blackburn
Westwood Elementary: Emma McGinnis, Luke Osborne and Lennon Riley Henderson
It took 11 rounds for the winner to be determined. The participants were congratulated by Ashe County School Board Members Dr. Lee Beckworth, Polly Jones, and Superintendent Donnie Johnson.
A Perpetual Spelling Bee Trophy was presented to Anna by Dr. Lee Beckworth, along with a championship trophy for her to keep. The Perpetual Spelling Bee Trophy will be displayed at her home school Mountain View Elementary for the next year.

Ashe County Middle: Ellie Swibold — seventh grade
Blue Ridge Elementary: Timmy Elliott — fourth grade
Westwood Elementary: Brooklyn Flanagan — sixth grade
On March 18, Blackburn competed at the Regional Spelling Bee at Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts in Winston-Salem. She finished 14th out of a field of 33 participants. She correctly spelled access, harpoon and precocious. She missed the word tahini and was the 19th participant out at the regionals.
“I really enjoyed participating at the regional spelling bee and it was a great experience,” Blackburn told her family as she stepped off the stage at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts.
The regional bee was sponsored by the Winston-Salem Journal and Truliant.
