The Ashe County Historical Society continues to seek as many old photographs of West Jefferson as possible for the group’s third book, titled “Images of West Jefferson.”
The book “Images of West Jefferson” will show how much the town has changed since its incorporation in 1915. However, old photos are difficult to come by, so the historical society now looks to the public for assistance, asking anyone with old photos of West Jefferson to allow historical society members to scan their photos for publication.
“I would like to see as many pictures coming in from as many sources as possible,” said Lonnie Jones, a member of the historical society’s board of directors.
In particular, Jones said the historical society is looking for photos of West Jefferson’s people, homes, businesses, schools and churches.
As of Tuesday, during a historical society meeting, Jones said the group needs an additional 120 photographs to finish the book. The group has until the end of July to collect photos. Afterword, all the images will be submitted to Arcadia Publishing, who will compile the images and publish the book before West Jefferson’s cenntineal celebration in 2015. The book is expected to be completed by April of 2014.
Because the book will highlight several of the changes that have taken place over the last 100 years in West Jefferson, any pictures of West Jefferson from the early-1900s through the present will be accepted. However, being a hisorical book, the group would like acquire as many older pictures as possible.
The historical society organized several photos during Tuesday’s meeting, figuring out when each photo was taken and who the people were in the photos. One of the photos depicted a West Jefferson man having his wagon pulled by two large hogs, a practice that was common at the time West Jefferson, according to historical society President Jerry Brown.
The group has also decided to heavily feature the “old hotel” in the book, which will most likely be the cover for “Images of West Jefferson.”
The historical society promises to take care of any submitted photographs. They will quickly scan the photos and return them as soon as possible.
