Applications available for SkyLine-Sponsored youth programs

Applications are now available for youth programs sponsored locally by SkyLine Membership Corporation, including the Frank James-SkyLine Scholarship, Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) Youth Tour and Cooperative Leadership Camp.

Frank James-SkyLine Scholarship

Ten local scholarships with a total value of $25,000 will be awarded in 2013 to children of SkyLine/SkyBest customers to assist them with the cost of a college education.

Five $1,000 scholarships, renewable up to four years, will be presented to students who will attend a four-year college university. Five $500 scholarships, renewable up to two years, will be presented to students who will attend a two-year community/technical college.

The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, financial need, and demonstrated leadership and community involvement.

Applications, including eligibility requirements, are available at area high school guidance departments, at all SkyLine Customer Service Centers and through SkyLine’s website, www.skyline.org. Deadlines for these scholarships are set by the local high school guidance department.

The scholarship is named in memory of Frank James, longtime SkyLine board member and former president, who was a strong advocate of education as a former teacher, principal and superintendent of Ashe County Schools.

FRS Youth Tour

SkyLine will sponsor two high school juniors to be among over 100 students to attend the Foundation for Rural Service’s 2013 Youth Tour to Washington, D.C..

Now in its nineteenth year, the FRS Tour brings rural students from across the U.S. to the capital city for a four-day visit from June 1 through 5 to some of the most historical sites in the nation.

Students will learn about the telecommunications industry, as well as the regulatory and legislative processes. Educational sessions on these topics are greatly enhanced by both site visits to the U.S. Capitol and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in addition to meetings with industry leaders and members of Congress.

The students are given ample time to explore the nation’s capital and its many attractions. The group visits such sites as the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the Korean, Vietnam and World War II Memorials, Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian Museums and much more.

Applications, including eligibility requirements, are available at area high school guidance departments, at all SkyLine Customer Service Centers and through SkyLine’s website. The application deadline for this program is Monday, April 8.

Cooperative Leadership Camp

SkyLine also is accepting applications for the 2013 Cooperative Leadership Conference, a five-day leadership development program scheduled from June 17-21, at White Lake, N.C.

Sponsored by the Cooperative Council of North Carolina and member cooperatives from across the state, the conference features workshops, speakers, recreation and small group sessions that center around the cooperative way of doing business. This year’s conference promises to be a fun week with lots of leadership development and fellowship opportunities for young people.

This program is for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. Participants also will be eligible to apply for a $1,000 college scholarship during their senior year of high school, and five outstanding campers will be selected to represent North Carolina at the National Institute on Cooperative Education (NICE) at Virginia Tech University July 26-31.

Applications, including eligibility requirements, are available at area high school guidance departments, at all SkyLine Customer Service Centers and through SkyLine’s website. The application deadline for this program is Monday, April 8.

For more information about any of these programs, please contact Karen Powell at SkyLine Membership Corporation at 1-800-759-2226.

"Unfair competition" in N.C. car market

An N.C. Senate bill would prohibit direct marketing to N.C. motorists by Tesla and companies like it. Is this a sound policy?
