The Huskies nearly pulled off its biggest win of the season against a team that had yet to taste defeat in conference action.
Ashe squandered a 12-point lead in the second half, and ended up falling in overtime to Elkin, 50-47.
It was a slow start for both teams in the first, with Elkin holding a 7-4 lead after the first eight minutes. Sam Lane scored five of Elkin’s seven points while Ashe got layups from Eli Gambill and Zach Lawrence.
The Elks started the second quarter strong with four more points from Lane and a bucket from Tre King to take a 13-4 lead.
Ashe answered back in a big way with a 15-2 scoring spurt to close the quarter. Jordan Spell started it with a three-point shot and Matthew Lee hit three free throws to bring Ashe back to within three points. Spell would add another layup, Lee hit a layup and Anderson Moore closed the half with a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Ashe a 19-15 lead.
The Huskies continued building on the lead in the third. Gambill hit a layup, then Lee reeled off five straight points. Kody King scored three for Elkin to make the score 26-19 in Ashe’s favor. Ashe closed the quarter on a high note once again, this time getting the final six points. Gambill hit a jumper outside the lane, then Spell connected on back-to-back shots, including a buzzer-beating jumper just inside the three-point line. Ashe held a 36-26 lead after the third.
Gambill started the fourth with a layup to give the Huskies its biggest lead of the night at 12 points. The Elks responded with 10 unanswered points, aided largely by forced turnovers from the defense using a full-court press. Lane scored three, T. King hit a jumper, Frank Hudspeth hit a layup and Frank Miller added a layup to get within three points at 38-35.
With under two minutes remaining, Johnathan Cox glided to the basket for a layup to give Ashe a five-point advantage.
On the next trip down, T. King buried a long three-pointer to make the score 40-38.
After a missed free throw by Ashe, Elkin drove down the court with a chance to tie or take the lead. It would be King once again, this time a layup with three seconds left sent the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Elkin scored first and never looked back, outscoring Ashe 10-7 in the final session to get the victory.
Elkin improved to 17-5 overall and 14-0 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference while Ashe dropped to 6-14 overall and 5-8 in the MVAC.
Lane led all scorers with 18 points. Elkin also got 14 points from T. King and five points from Miller.
Lee finished with an impressive double-double for Ashe. The junior scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Spell finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four steals and Moore added eight points and four rebounds.
Gambill finished with eight points, Cox had four and Lawrence finished with two.
Ashe will complete the regular season with a game at North Wilkes on Friday and Senior Night at home against West Wilkes next Tuesday.
