MMA, wrestling camp set for June 17
For the first time in Ashe County, young athletes will have a chance to learn about mixed martial arts (MMA) and wrestling during a summer camp coming up at Ashe County Middle School. Pitching standout Cameron Guyton was Ashe County’s lone selection to the 2013 Mountain Valley Athletic Conference All-Conference team. Ashe County had competitors in eight different events at the 2A Track Championship Meet in Greensboro on Friday. If you have lived in Ashe County for any length of time, you have probably heard the stories and tales about the 1940 Riverview men’s basketball team. In February, the final surviving member of that team, Frank Roland, passed away. Roland was also a member of the 2013 Ashe County Sports Hall of Fame Class, inducted two weeks ago. The season came to a close for the men’s tennis team last week at the 2A Midwest Regional. Ashe sent two singles players and one doubles team to the regional tournament, held in Lexington.
