Pitching standout Cameron Guyton was Ashe County’s lone selection to the 2013 Mountain Valley Athletic Conference All-Conference team. Ashe County had competitors in eight different events at the 2A Track Championship Meet in Greensboro on Friday. Erin Bingham had the best day of all Ashe athletes with a third place finish in the 300-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 47.33 seconds, and a fourth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a final time of 15.74 seconds. Four men’s tennis players were chosen to the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference All-Conference team. If you have lived in Ashe County for any length of time, you have probably heard the stories and tales about the 1940 Riverview men’s basketball team. In February, the final surviving member of that team, Frank Roland, passed away. Roland was also a member of the 2013 Ashe County Sports Hall of Fame Class, inducted two weeks ago. The season came to a close for the men’s tennis team last week at the 2A Midwest Regional. Ashe sent two singles players and one doubles team to the regional tournament, held in Lexington.
