Eight athletes qualify for track championship meet
Ashe County sent 11 individual athletes and a pair of relay teams to the 2A Midwest Regional track meet at North Stokes High School last weekend. Five individuals qualified for the state championship meet while three others were part of both relay teams that will be competing this Friday at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro. Four men’s tennis players were chosen to the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference All-Conference team. To get a spot on the all-conference team, each player had to make it to the semifinals of the conference tournament, held in Elkin at the end of April. Central Davidson broke open a 2-2 game in the fifth inning against Ashe County to defeat the Lady Huskies in the first round of the 2A state playoffs. If you have lived in Ashe County for any length of time, you have probably heard the stories and tales about the 1940 Riverview men’s basketball team. In February, the final surviving member of that team, Frank Roland, passed away. Roland was also a member of the 2013 Ashe County Sports Hall of Fame Class, inducted two weeks ago. The season came to a close for the men’s tennis team last week at the 2A Midwest Regional. Ashe sent two singles players and one doubles team to the regional tournament, held in Lexington. Lucas Zeller was the lone Husky player to make it out of the first round. Zeller defeated Daniel Dickens of Central Davidson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Ashe County softball dropped its conference tournament opener to Forbush, but still qualified for the 2A state playoffs, which will begin this Friday. Forbush defeated Ashe by a 10-3 score in the first round of the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Tournament. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has postponed two trout stockings scheduled on Monday for the Delayed Harvest sections of the Little River in Alleghany County and Big Horse Creek in Ashe County. Commission staff had planned to stock 1,500 trout in Little River and 1,675 trout in Big Horse Creek, but postponed due to flood conditions in the region.
