WEST JEFFERSON — The Lady Huskies scored a pair of goals in the final 23 minutes to pick up a 3-1 victory at home against North Wilkes on Thursday.

It was all Huskies early in the first half. Melissa Ramos saw her first shot of the night saved in the ninth minute. Maddy Houck nearly got a goal in the 23rd minute, but another nice stop by the Viking keeper kept Ashe off the board.

Ashe earned a pair of corner kicks in the 25th and 29th minutes, but it would not be until the 35th minute when Ashe finally got on the board. Senior midfielder Bekah Bowers fired a laser that found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

With one minute left in the half, a free kick for Ashe led to a great scoring chance, but a header from Valerie Keys sailed just wide of the goal, leaving the score 1-0 at the halftime break.

The second half started strong for Ashe with two corner kicks in the 44th minute, although the team came away empty on both attempts.

North Wilkes saw its offense come to life in the 53rd minute, earning the team’s first corner kick of the night. The Ashe defense was up for the challenge and did not allow a shot on goal.

The Vikings kept the offensive pressure up and were able to tie the game two minutes later. Lauryn Turner got a great pass and outran the Ashe defense for a breakaway shot that tied things up at 1-1.

Ashe quickly regained the lead in the 57th minute. Keys played a perfect pass from Ramos and easily fired a shot through the North Wilkes defense to take a 2-1 lead.

In the 64th minute, the Huskies added another goal on an almost identical play. Keys got another great pass from Ramos and got her shot into the net to cap off a strong seven-minute spurt for Ashe to retake the lead.

North Wilkes had one more scoring chance in the 70th minute off of a corner kick, but once again, Ashe cleared the ball without a shot on goal and kept the ball away from the visiting team for the final 10 minutes to secure the victory.

Ashe improved to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. North Wilkes dropped to 3-4-2 overall and 0-2 in the MVAC.

The Huskies will host West Wilkes on Tuesday and Alleghany on Wednesday.
