WEST JEFFERSON — It was a successful season opener for head coach Larry Dix and the women’s tennis team, scoring a 6-3 win at Hibriten on Tuesday.

“It was a good start for our young team,” said Dix.

Ashe got wins in four of the six singles matches and added two more wins in doubles competition.

In the top seeded match, Hibriten’s Bren Woods was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Carolina Current.

Second seeded Morgan Church got Ashe’s first win with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Anna Corley (third seed), Kaylie Fernandez (fourth seed) and Amber Miller (sixth seed) all earned wins for Ashe.

In doubles play, Corley and Fernandez got a win as did the tandem of Miller and Brooke Rutherford.

On Thursday, Ashe had its first home match against Watauga, one of the tougher teams the Lady Huskies will face this season.

The Pioneers came away with a 9-0 victory.

“It was good experience for our young team. We have three returning players from last year and three players new to the top six,” said Coach Dix.
