Alleghany defeats Ashe in three sets

WEST JEFFERSON — The defending 1A state champs got a battle from Ashe County in all three sets on Thursday, but Alleghany did just enough each time to sweep the Lady Huskies.

Alleghany won a squeaker in the first set, 25-23. The second set went to Alleghany with a little more comfortable margin of eight points at 25-17. In the third set, Ashe battled hard once again, but Alleghany hit enough good shots down the stretch to win the final set and the match, 25-22.

Seniors Gianna Federico and Lynsey Aldridge both had great games to keep Ashe in the contest. Federico finished with three kills and 10 hits while Aldridge led the team with 28 hits and 10 kills.

“Both of these ladies were positive leaders throughout the sets and tried to rally their team,” said Ashe County head coach Tania Rollins.

Junior Mattie Joines added seven kills in the contest. Corinne Jones had three, Rayna Blevins had one and Bella Potter had one.

The Lady Huskies were not as sharp serving the ball as they had been in the previous two matches. Ashe committed 14 errors on 57 attempts.

Aldridge led Ashe with eight digs. Jada McClure and Hailey Taylor each added six digs.

Seniors Haley Phipps and Lyndsi Goodman both chipped in 10 assists and set up over 60 shot attempts for their teammates.

Ashe fell to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

Alleghany improved to 3-2 and 1-0 in the MVAC.

The Lady Huskies will get back on the court on Tuesday with a road conference match at Elkin starting at 4:30 p.m.

JV volleyball

Alleghany was able to hang on to beat the Ashe County junior varsity squad, 2-1.

Ashe won the first set, 25-23. Alleghany stormed back in the second set to win by a 25-11 score to force a third and deciding set. Alleghany came out on top by a 15-6 score.

The JV team is 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the MVAC

Players of the Week

This week’s varsity Players of the Week from head coach Tania Rollins are seniors Gianna Federico and Lynsey Aldridge. Federico had 10 hitting attempts to go with three kills. Aldridge led the team in hitting attempts with 28 and added 10 kills.

The JV Players of the Week are sophomores Lauren Robinson and Marley Eller. Eller led the team with 14 serve attempts that led to nine points for the team. Eller also had 20 ball handling attempts with four assists for kills. Robinson had four hitting attempts and two kills. Both of these ladies are also positive teammates on and off the court.
