Ashe takes second in MVAC golf opener

ROARING GAP — Just one shot separated East Wilkes and Ashe County in Wednesday’s Mountain Valley Athletic Conference season opener. The Cardinals finished with a team score of 142, barely beating Ashe’s score of 143.

Alleghany was a distant third with a score of 167, followed by Wilkes Central with a 173 and North Wilkes with 183. West Wilkes, Starmount and Elkin do not have a team this year.

Sarah Hardin finished in first place overall with a score of 41, three shots ahead of Hunter Tharpe of East Wilkes. Cardinal golfers Ava Tharpe and Kayla Wilkes finished in a tie for third with a 49 and Ashe’s Madison Osborne was fifth with a 50.

Alexis Howell finished with a 52 and Bethany Bare shot a 63 to round out the scoring for the Lady Huskies.

Next up, the MVAC teams will come to West Jefferson to compete at Mountain Aire on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 3 p.m.
