Lady Huskies open season with win

CLAREMONT — Ashe County started the season off of on the right foot with a 60-30 victory at Bunker Hill on Tuesday.

Sophomore Sam Woods led all scorers with 19 points while adding four rebounds and a pair of assists. Freshman Hallie Treva had a solid debut with 11 points and senior Chloe Sullivan filled up the stat sheet with eight points, five assists and five steals.

Jayce Miller chipped in seven points, Lauren Eldreth had six points and Olivia Patton did a little bit of everything with three points, three rebounds and a pair of assists.

Defensively, Sydney Kate Grubb had a big day with a game-high seven steals. Amber Miller led Ashe with six rebounds. Grubb added three points, Miller scored two points and Gracie Greene hit a free throw. Emma Shepherd did not score during the contest but did contribute on the glass with three rebounds.

“I was really pleased with our first game effort. We played really hard and we shared the basketball. Our defense was the difference, forcing 32 turnovers,” said Ashe County head coach Laura Foster.

For Bunker Hill, freshman Madison Stotts led the team with 12 points. Alyssa McCrary added eight and Kailey Travis had five.

Next up for the Lady Huskies will be a pair of home games. Ashe will host Watauga on Tuesday and Avery County on Wednesday.

“We will continue to work hard and get be better. We have a tough stretch of games coming up,” Foster said.

After those two games, Ashe hits the road to Watauga on Dec. 2 and to always-strong North Surry on Dec. 5. Ashe opens conference play on Dec. 7 with Elkin, who finished as conference runner up last season.
