WEST JEFFERSON — The Ashe County Lady Huskies hope they have a state playoff run left in them after the conference tournament came to an end last week.
North Wilkes, the eventual MVAC Tournament champion, took down the Lady Huskies in the semifinals of the tournament, 71-55.
The Vikings were on fire from three-point range, hitting 10 from beyond the arc to help get the win. Raygan Casstevens and Victoria Young both scored 15 for the Vikings.
Freshman Hallie Treva was Ashe’s leading scorer with 11 points.
Senior Chloe Sullivan and sophomore Sam Woods were named to the MVAC All-Conference team while Treva and senior Sydney Kate Grubb were chosen as honorable mention players.
Woods was also one of seven players on the all-tournament team, joining tournament MVP Emily Phillips of North Wilkes, her teammates Casstevens and Young, Alexis Pardue of East Wilkes Laken Mathis of East Wilkes and Alexis Hoppers of Alleghany.
Now, the Lady Huskies will prepare for the 2A state playoffs, a spot that the program has been familiar with almost every season the school has been in existence. The Lady Huskies have made the playoffs in 16 of the 18 years that the program has been going.
Ashe County will travel to Belmont to take on Stuart Cramer High School in the first round of the 2A state playoffs. Stuart Cramer will enter the contest with an 18-7 overall record while the Lady Huskies are 15-11.
The Storm features a trio of players who average at least 10 points per game on the season. Senior forward Laura Trull enters the game averaging 14 points and 13 rebounds per game. Haley Bourhill averages 13.8 PPG while Carley Womack averages 10.4 PPG.
Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
