WEST JEFFERSON — Weather and experience are working in favor of the Ashe County Huskies so far in this young spring sports season. Thanks to unseasonably warm temperatures and very little wet weather, the men’s tennis team has been able to get down to business on the courts since the first day of practice.

“I am excited about this upcoming men’s tennis season. I have six returning players from last season, and four of the top six seeds are returning,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix.

Ashe has just one senior, Noah Gouge, who is also one of the top six returning seeds. Jacob Key, Simon Houck and Devin Rupard were all seeded players last year who are returning. Corbin Coldiron and Juan Jaramillo were part of last year’s team and will be hoping to earn a spot in the top six.

“Noah, Jacob, Simon and Devin are all good players and it will be very competitive in the top of the seeding lineup,” said Coach Dix.

There will be five newcomers to the team this season, and Dix says he’s very excited to see what they will bring to the team and who will round out the top six seeds.

“We are working hard and this is a very quick team,” Dix added. “Our biggest early challenge will be control and consistency.

Dix said he’s not sure how the rest of the conference will stack up against the Huskies but he does expect that Elkin will be the strongest team to contend with one again.
