WEST JEFFERSON — The Ashe County tennis team got off to a nice start with a pair of conference victories early on in the 2017 season.

Ashe took down West Wilkes by a 6-3 score in the first Mountain Valley Athletic Conference matchup of the year.

“It was a good conference win for us,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix.

The Huskies won four of the six singles matches and clinched the win by winning two of the three doubles events.

West Wilkes top seed Landon Church defeated Ashe’s top seed Noah Gouge, 6-1, 6-0.

In the second seeded match, Jacob Key needed a third set tiebreaker to get the win. Key won the first set over Owen Miller, 6-3. Miller bounced back to beat Key in the second set, 6-4. In the tiebreaker, Key got his shots to fall in on the way to a 10-4 victory.

Third seeded Simon Houck cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Brandon Milem.

Ashe got a win in the fourth seeded match with Devin Rupard winning over Daniel McNeill in a third set tiebreak, 6-2, 6-7, 10-8. The final singles win came in the fifth seeded match with Corbin Coldiron beating Noah McCrae, 6-2, 6-1.

On Thursday, the Huskies had no problems with Alleghany, winning that match 9-0.

“It was another good home win for us. We played well but it is early in the season and we have a lot to work on,” said Dix.

Gouge beat Aaron Hernandez in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Key was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Christian Denis and Houck easily picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Colby Brooks.

Rupard earned a 6-3, 7-5 win against Shaqeel Lawson, Coldiron was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Garrett Wishon and Nguyen finished the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Jacob Poole.
