MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. — The Lady Bulldog softball team started their 2017 season off on the right foot with an 11-9 win over Johnson County (TN) last Thursday.

Both teams had their bats going in the season opener with Ashe County racking up 19 base hit and Johnson County connecting on 13 hits of their own.

The game went back and forth throughout with Johnson County tying the game at 8-8 in the eighth inning.

Ashe came up to the plate and ended up scoring twice in the ninth, including an RBI hit from Gwyneth Wood to break the tie.

Skyler Vannoy earned the win for Ashe County. She threw nine innings, surrendering nine runs, 13 hits and striking out 12. H. Rider took the loss for Johnson County. She pitched nine innings, surrendering nine runs, 19 hits, and striking out 10.

Offensively, the Bulldogs had a lot to be proud of in last week’s effort. Skyler Vannoy, Brooke Vannoy, Macie Bowlin, Gwyneth Wood, Emma Holman, Emma Jones and Allison Blevins each collected multiple hits. Blevins, Skyler Vannoy, and Bowlin each drove in two runs to lead the offensive charge.

The softball team will be back on the diamond on Tuesday, March 21 at Alleghany. The team was originally supposed to play at North Wilkes on Monday, but that game had to be postponed due to the weather. The game will be made up at a later date.
