Ashe places fifth at New River Country Club

SPARTA — Wilkes Central faced its toughest conference challenge of the season, winning by just one stroke over second place Alleghany on Thursday at the New River Country Club.

Alleghany played extremely well on its home course to finish with a 150, just one shot back of Wilkes Central who won the match with a 149.

Starmount was third with a score of 178, followed by Elkin in fourth with a score of 179 and the Ashe County Huskies in fifth with a team total of 185.

East Wilkes shot a score of 187, good enough for sixth place overall. North Wilkes finished with a score of 188 for seventh place and West Wilkes rounded out the conference match with a score of 202 in eighth place.

Daniel Lipscomb finished with Ashe County’s best round with a 43. Caleb Scott shot a 44, Jacob Schell finished with a 48, Ben Brooks shot a 49, Jack Hinson shot a 49 and Corey Carter finished with a 50.

This was the final regular season match of the year as the teams will now look ahead to the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday, April 25 at the Roaring Gap Country Club.
