LENOIR — The Ashe County Huskies will try and pick up their first victory of the season this Friday when the team makes the trip to West Caldwell for the final non-conference game of the season.

Ashe (0-3) is coming off of a 42-0 defeat last Friday at the hands of West Caldwell’s biggest rival, Hibriten.

The Warriors (2-1) earned a 28-21 victory over West Iredell in a game that was played on Thursday due to the storms that rolled through the state.

For the Huskies, the offense just could not get anything going against a fast and athletic Hibriten defense, leading to the team being shut out for the first time since 2012.

West Caldwell’s entire offensive attack was led by senior tailback Taye Dula. The 5-11, 180-pounder ran for 246 yards and two touchdowns. West Caldwell had 281 yards of total offense.

Defensively, the Warriors struggled with Hibriten, as everyone has so far this year. Other than that, West Caldwell gave up 21 points last week and held East Burke scoreless in the first week of the regular season.

West Caldwell’s second leading rusher, Jeremy Boyce, missed last week’s game, but is expected to return for this week’s contest. Boyce ran for 197 yards against East Burke and 75 yards against Hibriten.

The Warriors are coached by first year man DeVore Holman. Holman replaced Chip English who moved to Alabama to take the head coaching position at Grissom High School. English took over a West Caldwell program that won two games in three years and in his third season, saw the Warriors finish with a 10-3 overall record and a playoff victory last year.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. from Thuss Stadium.
